Happy International Parliamentary Day to all the Representatives of people in the National Assembly of Afghanistan!
30th of June is International Parliament Day. Parliament or the National Assembly is one of the three branches of government whose three main functions are to pursue the activities of the government, to legislate and to represent the people.
This day is being celebrated as the Afghan parliament represents people from every province, region, language and ethnicity, to defend their rights and make their voices heard. State Ministry for Parliamentary Affairs, as the sole exclusive authority in the country, is responsible for the organization, maintenance, expansion and development of parliamentary relations between the three power branches of government. Thus it plays its role in institutionalizing democracy and strengthening a legitimate, democratic and accountable system.
The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/72/278, recognized the role of parliaments in national plans and strategies and in ensuring greater transparency and accountability at national and global levels and established International-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the global organization of parliaments in 1889.This day reminds the parliaments of the world that in order to improve the lives of the people, it is necessary to focus on important issues and decisions. In addition, it is an opportunity for parliaments to identify challenges, and ways to address them effectively.
